Advancing Data Collection, Traceability, and Transparency in the Fishing Industry

FCF Co., Ltd. (FCF), a trailblazer in the fishing industry, is actively pursuing innovative initiatives to enhance data collection, traceability, and transparency in the distant water fishery industry. Through partnerships and collaborations with several stakeholdes, such as Satlink, the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), and the Environment & Animal Society of Taiwan (EAST), FCF is spearheading projects that leverage advanced technologies and industry best practices.

Electronic Monitoring System Project

This year, FCF has partnered with Satlink to enhance fishery dependent data collection in distant water fisheries. FCF’s Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) has been installed on multiple vessels participating in their Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs). The collaboration aims to increase at-sea monitoring of fishing activities, ensuring compliance with regional fishery management measures and supporting sustainable fishery practices aligned with FCF’s goals.

EMS employs advanced technologies such as video recording, image processing, and AI recognition systems to improve the accuracy of fishing data, including catch composition, target species, and non-target species. By monitoring fishing activities, EMS assists in assessing fisheries resources and contributes to the conservation and sustainable management of marine ecosystems. For instance, when bycatch incidents occur, EMS records images of the event and subsequent on-board handling, providing valuable information for policymakers and fisheries managers to implement effective action plans. The next phase of the project will focus on deploying more electronic observer technology, analyzing reports, and implementing improvement actions within the supply chain.

Seafood Traceability & Transparency Project

In 2023, FCF, along with the UK-based Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) and the Environment & Animal Society of Taiwan (EAST), has launched the “Seafood Traceability & Transparency Project.” The project aims to evaluate and enhance the traceability management systems of distant-water fisheries.

Concerns regarding the sustainability of global fisheries have gained significant attention in recent years. To address these concerns, various stakeholders, including governments, NGOs, seafood distributors, and consumer-facing brands, have collaborated to develop solutions that promote environmental and social outcomes.

FCF, as a leading seafood company, has been actively involved in sustainable fishery projects since 2013, focusing on traceability, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility. The company has invested substantial resources in building a compliance management system to ensure the accuracy of information provided by its supply chain partners. This system enhances transparency throughout the supply chain. To further strengthen FCF’s traceability system and promote legal compliance, FCF is partnering with EJF and EAST, two environmental sustainability-focused NGOs, to launch the “Seafood Traceability & Transparency Project.” The project will initially assess the traceability and transparency of FCF’s current supply chain management system against international standards and industry best practices.

Advanced ERP System for Seafood Traceability

FCF is taking a pioneering step in the pelagic fishing industry by developing an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system in collaboration with global ERP leader SAP. This innovative initiative aims to address the specific needs of Taiwan’s fishery trading sector and promote transparency, sustainability, and seafood traceability.

FCF’s ERP system is tailored to the unique characteristics of the pelagic fishing industry, providing a comprehensive management solution. It integrates information from various departments within the company and enhances supply chain management capabilities. The system effectively tracks catch information from participating fishing vessels and integrates transaction data across fishing, transportation, and sales processes. By doing so, it ensures that all seafood products within the supply chain adhere to domestic and international fishery regulations.

The implementation of this ERP system represents a significant development for FCF, enabling them to streamline operations, ensure food safety, and enhance transparency in fishery information. By consolidating data and improving traceability, FCF aims to lead positive changes in the pelagic fishing industry and contribute to sustainable fishing practices.

Social Responsibility Progress

The "FCF Supplier Social Requirement - for Vessel Owners (v4.0)" is online!

FCF are pleased to announce the official launch of the updated FCF Supplier Social Requirement – for Vessel Owners (v4.0) this year. With supply chain partners’ active participation and collaboration, FCF have gained valuable insights into the challenges faced by the fishing sector. Building upon this collective effort and incorporating stakeholder concerns, we have made significant modifications and revisions to the previous FCF Supplier Social Requirement. FCF’s aim is to provide enhanced support to vessel owners in implementing social responsibility measures and mitigating potential risks.

The updated version of the FCF Supplier Social Requirement places a strong emphasis on enabling vessel owners to thoroughly scrutinize and assess their management systems. By doing so, FCF empowers its supply chain partners to detect and resolve crew-related issues at an early stage and ensure their management practices are robust in preventing any form of forced labor.

Achievement: Fishing Vessel Earns Best Seafood Practices Responsible Fishing Vessel Standard Certification

FCF are delighted to share the exciting news that a fishing vessel working closely with FCF has successfully obtained the prestigious Best Seafood Practices Responsible Fishing Vessel Standard (RFVS) certification this year. This remarkable achievement is the result of the vessel’s participation in the FCF Social Responsibility Program and their close collaboration with FCF to enhance various aspects of their vessel management systems.

The Responsible Fishing Vessel Standard is a certification program that focuses on operational practices related to crew safety and welfare on fishing vessels. RFVS adheres to high standards and has completed the benchmarking process by the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI), earning recognition from SSCI. Among the various standards applicable to distant water fisheries, RFVS stands out as one of the most widely accepted and recognized certifications for social responsibility.

With growing public concern for the protection of labor rights at sea, obtaining relevant international certifications has proved to be one the most credible and effective ways for fishing vessels to demonstrate compliance with international standards and expectations. By meeting certification requirements, vessels not only mitigate operational risks but also significantly reduce the likelihood of accidental incidents. FCF anticipates increased collaboration with supply chain partners and vessel owners to support more vessels becoming eligible for international social responsibility certifications.
